The meeting started with several important announcements. First, there will be no July or December meetings. The topics for the next four meetings are confirmed and are on the Calendar section of the NEJUG Web Site. Fran Kramer, Senior Web Designer at Apex Consulting Group, Inc, came up with several new logo designs for the NEJUG. They were presented to the group. These logos will be posted on the NEJUG web site, and in the next several weeks we will be adding a logo contest page so that NEJUG members can vote on the new logo. If you have any other logo ideas or would like to submit your own, please contact Fran Kramer at fkramer@apexcgi.com.
Next we discussed the need for an alternative meeting site for alternating months. The room at Sun can only hold 160 people, and it is difficult to book in advance. Several NEJUG members had suggestions for other sites that Mark will be following up with this month. If any of you have other suggestions, please contact Mark Richards at nejug@apexcgi.com. We would like to remain within the Waltham/Burlington area if possible.
Next, we had a very involved discussion about the issue of recruiting and job solicitation. This was a hot topic with varied responses. Several ideas that circulated around the group were to keep the membership list private, allow recruiters to request a membership list of those wishing to be contacted, posting on the web site members who wish to be contacted, add a job postings section to the web site, and finally having recruiters be able to talk about job opportunities at the start of the meeting. At this point this topic was a discussion item only. During the August meeting we will discuss this topic further and come up with a resolution. In the meantime, we will be using the NEJUG bulletin board and e-mail to discuss the issue and the membership list will remain private.
Finally, we had a raffle at the end of the break. Addison-Wesley provided multiple copies of the 11 new Java books that have just been published and showcased at the JavaOne conference. We gave away 16 books, 8 t-shirts, and 10 Java Class Library posters. We have more of these books and posters to give away at the August meeting. Also, you can order these books directly from the NEJUG Web Site.
JavaOne 2000 Review:
Mark
Richards, the new NEJUG President, lead a discussion about the
highlights of the JavaOne Conference. His presentation started with
some notable quotes from several of the sessions and why these quotes
were significant. He then went on to talk about several highlights
within the areas of threading, performance, wireless technology,
and internet architecture. His discussion concluded with a critical
analysis of performance, design patterns, and finally applets. His
discussion provoked quite a bit of discussion. You can review the
announcements and Mark's presentation by clicking here.
JavaOne Web Site and Video
Red Rogers,
an officer in the NEJUG, showed the group the significant resources
available on the java.sun.com web site, and showed the group how
to navigate through the JavaOne
Web Site. It is through this web site that you can download
all of the slides from every session at the JavaOne Conference.
Finally, Red showed everyone a video of the JavaOne 2000 highlights
and talked more about some of the significant events that took place.
